To Minya

from Bubs

The Beginning

You were born Damon Jon Baker to Mum. She was young, and you quickly became the favourite son. Surrounded by the love of Nana, Mum, and Aunties Jane and Lorayne, your loving spirit began to thrive.

When you turned eight, you had a bit of a surprise: I was born. This would change your comfortable life as an only child forever. When I finally found my words, I called you my 'Minya,' and you called me your 'Bubbs.'

Growing Up

We grew up together under the beautiful skies of Mount Maunganui—true kids of the 80s. Our youth was happy, filled with family, friends, and cousins to get up to mischief with. You were always the leader, and I followed closely behind.

Usually, you led me into trouble: down holes you’d covered up on the front lawn, into walls on our bikes, or into Mum’s cigarette packet—telling me “try one Blair, the taste like lollies”.' But your favourite place to lead me was down dark hallways, just so you could jump out and give me a fright.

The Journey

Then you took your next step. You joined the Navy and made us all so proud. You travelled the world and made lifelong friends along the way. By 1995, London was calling, and you went to start a new life.

You connected with the Scottish clan and found your pride tribe. You kept in touch with letters, postcards, and those occasional I love you payphone calls: – “ I have a collect call from Damon Ralston, would you like to accept?”

The Love

When you returned home one year, you saw that I had grown up but was in need of some direction. You told Mum I should come to London. You took control and gave me more than any brother should. You helped me find myself when I was lost; you provided love and comfort beyond anything I’d known. You pushed me to achieve, and you stood there beaming with pride when I did.

You supported me in every way you could, even when you were struggling yourself. You were always so much more than a brother. Mum was so proud of you for this—it filled her heart knowing I had you to look out for me while she was so far away.

The Farewell

My brother, my best friend, my guardian, my Minya: Go rest with Mum now, and tell her I love her. Tell our stories to our Nanas, our Popas, and the Whanau who have passed. Know that I will be here to make you proud every day. I will live every moment with you in my heart. I’ll dance again to our favourite songs, and I will raise my children to love one another, the way you loved and looked after me.

You will forever be my Minya, and I — your Bubbsie.
